When entering Thailand most visitors (citizens of 40 visa exempt countries) receive a free
tourist visa "on arrival" valid for a period of up to 30 days. If you wish to stay longer a two
month tourist
visa can be applied for at any Thai Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence or other countries outside Thailand (Victoria Point can't do this). A tourist visa can be extended by one month whilst you are in Thailand on the payment of around 1,900 Baht at any immigration office (Ranong can do this).
A border crossing at Ranong entails a ferry journey across the mouth of the River Chan to Burma (Myanmar). The scenery here is quite spectacular and worth the visit by itself. With a reduced fishing fleet, reduced trade, the Ranong Port is not as bustling as it was, but never-the-less still an interesting place to visit. While Victoria Point, where you land in Burma provides a glimpse of a different culture, as well as a chance to pick up some bargains.
